What Is Pilates?

Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in the late 19th Century, and suffered from chronic illness for most of his childhood. He believed that many health problems are caused by poor lifestyle, poor posture and poor breathing. He devised a series of exercises to strengthen the core muscles, and these are the foundation of both traditional and modern Pilates.

Pilates uses breathing techniques and focusses on the core muscle groups and the spine. By strengthening these areas of the body first, strength, fitness and flexibilty are all improved.

Pilates demands intense focus in order to control your breathing and your core muscles. This is not easy, but in pilates the way that exercises are done is more important than the exercises themselves.
